Most of the housing stock we work on was built between the 1920s and the 1970s, so the flues are clay tile and the crowns are thin. Four problems come up over and over.

Questions we get
Once a year, and NFPA 211 calls for an annual inspection whether or not it needs cleaning. If you burn most weekends through winter, sweeping every season is the honest answer. If you light it twice a year, the inspection still matters because nests and cracks do not care how often you burn.
Level I is a visual check of everything readily accessible. Level II adds a camera run of the full flue and is what you want after an earthquake, before buying a house, or after any chimney fire. Escrow usually asks for Level II.
Creosote in the flue absorbs moisture and releases odor, which is why it gets worse in summer and after rain. Sweeping removes the source. Our deodorizing treatment handles what has soaked into the masonry.
Usually a blocked flue, a damper that is not opening fully, or a house so tight that the chimney cannot draw. Some are solved in one visit, some need a smoke chamber correction or a taller flue. The inspection tells us which.
Yes. Repair, service and installation, including wood burning conversions. Gas units still need annual service, since the venting and the burner both foul up.
A standard sweep and Level I inspection runs about an hour. A Level II camera inspection takes longer because we go the full length of the flue and stop at anything worth showing you.
