What breaks inside a fireplace

The firebox brick, the refractory panels, the damper and the smoke chamber above them. That is most of our repair work.

The firebox is the part you see the fire in. In an older masonry fireplace it is firebrick set in refractory mortar. Heat cycles open the joints, the mortar washes out, and gaps appear behind the grate. Once a gap goes past a quarter inch, the fire is sitting closer to the framing than it should.

Prefab fireplaces are different. They use refractory panels, which are cast sheets that line the metal box. Panels crack. A crack wider than the edge of a dime means the panel has failed and needs swapping, because behind it is sheet metal and then wood.

The damper sits at the throat, just above the firebox. Rust seizes it, soot jams it, and a warped one never seals. A damper stuck open bleeds heat up the flue all winter.

Then the smoke chamber, the sloped space above the damper. Rough brick and open mortar there slow the draft and collect creosote. Parging it smooth is a real repair, and it is one people never think to ask about.

The firebox floor wears too. Ash and shovel work grind the hearth brick down until the joints are trenches. That gets rebuilt with fresh firebrick.

How we work out what needs doing

We open the damper, get a light and a camera into the firebox and the smoke chamber, and look before anyone talks price.

A stain on the hearth or a puff of smoke into the room tells you something is wrong. It does not tell you what. A cracked panel, a seized damper and a sooted smoke chamber can all push smoke back at you, and the fix for each is a different job.

So we look first. You see the photos, and the quote matches what the camera actually found.

Repairs we do most

  1. Firebox rebuild and repointing

    Grinding out washed-out joints and repacking them with refractory mortar, or cutting in new firebrick where the units have cracked through.

  2. Refractory panel replacement

    Swapping cracked panels in a prefab firebox for the ones the manufacturer specced. A hairline is watchable. A crack you can catch a fingernail in is not.

  3. Damper repair or replacement

    Freeing a seized throat damper, or fitting a top-mount damper that seals at the crown and doubles as a cap.

  4. Smoke chamber parging

    Coating the rough smoke chamber smooth so the draft pulls clean and creosote has nowhere to grab.

  5. Firebox floor and glass doors

    Relaying a worn hearth floor in fresh firebrick, and fitting or resealing glass doors so the gasket actually closes.

Repair or rebuild, and is it safe to keep using

Most fireboxes can be repaired. Stop using it when you can see cracks straight through to metal or framing, or when the damper will not close.

A rebuild comes up when the firebox has moved. Gaps that open along a diagonal line, brick that has dropped, a back wall leaning in, that is the point where patching stops holding and the whole box gets taken back to sound brick.

Safety is simpler than people fear. A cracked refractory panel or an open firebox joint puts the fire nearer to combustible framing than the code allows, and that is a real fire risk over a season of use. If that is what we find, we say so plainly and tell you to hold off until it is fixed.

Earthquakes make this worse in Los Angeles. Northridge in 1994 cracked fireboxes and flue tile across the basin, and every shake since has added a little. A firebox that looked fine last year can open up after a jolt you barely felt.

Fireplace repair questions

How do I know my firebox needs repair?
Open joints you can slide a coin into, cracked or bowed refractory panels, brick that crumbles when you touch it, or a damper that will not open or close. Smoke coming back into the room is another one. Any of those is worth a look.
What does fireplace repair cost?
It depends on what is wrong. Repointing a few firebox joints is a small job. Swapping refractory panels or relaying the floor costs more. We look inside first, then quote, and the quote is the price.
Can a cracked refractory panel wait?
A fine hairline can. A crack wide enough to catch a fingernail cannot, because the fire is then closer to the metal and the framing behind it than it should be. We will tell you which one you have.
Is it safe to use a fireplace with a damaged firebox?
Not with cracks that run through to metal or framing, and not with a damper that will not close. Cosmetic marks on the face are a different matter. The inspection sorts one from the other.
Do you repair prefab fireplaces or only masonry ones?
Both. Masonry fireboxes get firebrick and refractory mortar. Prefab units get manufacturer panels and parts. The repair is different, so we check which one you have first.
How long does the work take?
A panel swap or a damper is often one visit. Repointing or relaying a firebox floor runs longer, and refractory mortar needs time to cure before you light a fire on it.
