A dairy town that turned into a postwar city

Nearly half of Norwalk's homes date from the 1950s. If yours still burns wood, this page covers keeping it that way and switching to gas.

By the early 1900s Norwalk was a dairy center, with some of the largest sugar beet farms in Southern California. On the city's east side, farm and ranch land began changing over in 1954, when Interstate 5 opened. Cerritos College followed in 1955. Incorporation came two years later.

The census puts 47 percent of Norwalk's housing units in the 1950s, which means the chimney on a typical Norwalk house has been through roughly seventy winters by now. Old enough.

Air rules matter here too. South Coast AQMD can call a No-Burn day for wood fireplaces across the whole basin on any day from November through the end of February, based on the forecast for fine particles. Gas is treated differently.

Wood to gas

Three things to settle before you switch

  • Is the flue sound?

Gas still vents up the chimney. All of it. A cracked liner that leaked smoke will leak gas exhaust too, and that exhaust carries carbon monoxide. The camera settles it.

  • Logs or an insert?

A log set sits in the open firebox and looks like a wood fire. An insert closes the opening behind glass and heats the room far better. It needs its own stainless liner. All the way up.

  • What happens to the damper?

Gas logs in an open fireplace need the damper kept from closing all the way, so exhaust always has a way out. A clamp or stop does that.

Questions

Wood or gas in a Norwalk home

Can we still burn wood in Norwalk?
Yes, except on declared No-Burn days. Under South Coast AQMD Rule 445 those days can be called on any date from November through the end of February, so check 1-877-4NO-BURN before you light a fire in those months.
Do No-Burn days apply to a gas fireplace?
The curtailment in Rule 445 covers devices that burn wood. A fireplace set up to burn only gas, with the burner fixed in place, sits in its own category in the rule. So, generally, no.
Should the chimney be inspected before we convert to gas?
Yes. Gas exhaust leaves through the same flue, so the liner has to be sound first. A Level II camera run shows every joint from the firebox to the top.
Our gas logs came with the house and the pilot keeps going out. Is it worth fixing?
Often it is. A pilot that will not stay lit usually comes down to a thermocouple or a thermopile, which is a small part. Replacing the whole set is the last resort.
When should we book a sweep if we still burn wood?
Early fall. The wood burning season in Rule 445 starts in November, and a clean flue before then means the first cold night is covered.
