Redondo chimneys split into a water side and an inland side
Near the water, Redondo chimneys wear out from weather. In North Redondo, they wear out from age.
The city draws its coastal zone at Pacific Coast Highway, and everything west of that line takes the weather coming off the bay before the rest of Redondo does. In 1988 two winter storms battered the pier before it burned that May. A cap or a crown on this side of the highway sees the same wind every winter.
North Redondo sits inland, east of Hermosa. Salt matters less up there. Redondo went from 13,092 people in 1940 to 46,986 in 1960, and census counts show about 17,700 of today's homes built between 1950 and 1979. Chimneys from those decades are wearing out on age alone.
The mix changed too. Detached houses were 77 percent of the city's homes in 1960 and about 41 percent by 2019. So a Redondo call can mean a prewar house, a 1960s house or a 1980s townhome. We ask which before we come.

The oldest blocks
About 1,600 Redondo homes predate 1940. The Original Townsite district on North Gertruda Avenue went on the National Register in 1988. Houses that old often have clay tile or no liner at all. The camera goes up before we quote.

Before you book in Redondo
- I live in North Redondo, well away from the beach. Do I still need a stainless cap?
- Any cap keeps rain and animals out. By the water we put on stainless because it lasts. Inland, a sound galvanized cap can have years left, and we will tell you if yours does.
- Why does my chimney only leak in big storms?
- Wind pushes rain sideways into brick, crown cracks and flashing seams. A light shower runs straight off. A storm off the bay drives water in. We trace it to the crown, the brick or the flashing and fix that spot.
- My house is one of the pre-1940 ones. What does the inspection cover?
- The full flue on camera, plus the firebox, smoke chamber and crown. Houses that age often have clay tile or no liner, so we look at every joint and hand you the photos.
- Is late fall too late to get a Redondo chimney swept?
- No, just book it before the first fire. From November through February the South Coast AQMD calls no-burn days for wood fireplaces, so check the forecast before you light one.
